On a day where Michigan State Men’s Basketball lost a player to the transfer portal, it picked one right back up.
The Spartans have acquired Charlotte transfer center Anton Bonke, according to On3. The junior from Port Vila, Vanuatu is the first player to transfer to MSU this season.
Bonke is registered at a towering 7-foot-2. This would make him the tallest Spartan player ever, surpassing a handful of 7-footers such as Tom Herzog and Marcus Bingham. MSU will be the third team Bonke’s played for; his freshman year was spent at Providence where he only started one game; his sophomore year was spent at Charlotte where he started all 32 games. With the 49ers, he averaged 25.6 minutes, 10.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.
With center Carson Cooper and forward Jaxon Kohler graduating, the Spartans were in need of a threat that could display damage in the post. With the high school commitment of 7-foot-1 Ethan Taylor, this need was not as great. Now, with the commitment of Bonke, the need for a threat in the post is no longer essential. This addition solidifies MSU’s post game for the upcoming basketball season.
With the addition of Banke and the loss of sophomore guard Divine Ugochukwu — who submitted his name in the transfer portal before the Tuesday deadline — the Spartans only have one scholarship remaining. There is no deadline for MSU to find the remaining player it's interested in — once a player is in the transfer portal, they can stay there indefinitely, sign with a new team or withdraw their name at any time.
