Michigan State hockey former goaltender Trey Augustine won the 2026 Mike Richter Award on Friday night, presented to the best goaltender in men’s hockey.
Augustine, former forward Porter Martone and senior center Charlie Stramel were also named to the CCM/AHCA All-American teams. Augustine and Martone earned First Team All-American honors, while Stramel was named to the second team.
MSU had the most All-American selections of any program.
Along with the accolades, Augustine made his professional debut for the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday night, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, who he signed a contract with on March 31. MSU coach Adam Nightingale, goaltenders Dolan Gilbert and Melvin Strahl and forwards Nathan Mackie and Griffin Jurecki were in attendance to support Augustine.
Augustine played the entire game, making 26 saves in the Griffins’ 4-1 loss to the Chicago Wolves. The game was tied until the Wolves scored three goals in the third period.
Martone has played six games with the Philadelphia Flyers since signing on March 29, the day after MSU’s season ended. He has tallied six points (2-4--6), including an overtime game-winning goal on April 5. The goal helped defeat the Boston Bruins, keeping the Flyers in playoff contention.
Martone scored his second NHL goal on Thursday, April 9, against the Detroit Red Wings. The majority of MSU hockey’s 2025-26 program was in attendance, with the exception of players who already exited East Lansing for professional tryouts and contracts.
Stramel signed with the Minnesota Wild for the 2026-27 season but is finishing his communication degree at MSU as he broke his ankle in MSU’s final game.
Augustine’s Richter Award-winning, All-American season
Augustine was a Richter Award semifinalist in all three seasons at MSU and a finalist in each of the past two years. He won the award over goaltenders Michael Hrabal (Massachusetts) and Josh Kotai (Augustana).
“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive this award,” Augustine said to the media. “So many great goalies before me have achieved this and to be up there with them means a lot.”
Augustine finished his final season 24-9-1 overall, including 11-5-0 against ranked teams and 10-2-0 against top-five opponents.
His .929 save percentage was sixth in the NCAA. He also finished with a 2.11 goals-against average, eleventh nationally.
Earlier in the season, Augustine was named Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the second-straight season. He was also a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
In all-time MSU program history, Augustine ranks second in career save percentage (.922), fifth in GAA (2.40) and sixth in career wins (66).
Augustine is also the first two-time All-American for MSU since Ryan Miller (2001-02).
Martone’s All-American season
Martone is the only freshman in MSU history to earn First Team All-American honors and one of two freshmen nationally to do so, along with Ethan Wyttenbach of Quinnipiac.
Martone left his mark on the freshman record book at MSU, finishing second all-time with 25 goals and fifth with 50 points. He was a crucial part of MSU’s offense all season.
The winger was second in the NCAA with 0.71 goals per game, and third in the nation with 1.43 points per game. He recorded 17 multi-point performances across 35 games.

Stramel’s All-American season
Stramel’s best collegiate season was his last one. He finished with a career-best 44 points, second to only Martone, his linemate.
He marked his first career hat trick with the game winning goal in a 5-4 overtime victory against Penn State. Stramel finished the season tied for the nation’s lead with seven game-winning goals.
Stramel’s 482 faceoff wins were second in the NCAA, while his points, goals and assists per game were ranked all season.
His presence was highlighted by a plus-29 rating, the best at MSU and tied for fourth nationally.
