Six Michigan State hockey members have received Big Ten hockey postseason honors, announced by the conference today.

Junior goaltender Trey Augustine, senior defenseman Matt Basgall, senior center Charlie Stramel and freshman winger Porter Martone were named to the All-Big Ten First Team while senior winger Daniel Russell received honorable mention.

Taking up four of the six spots, the Spartans have more first team players than any other team in the conference.

On top of the player accolades, head coach Adam Nightingale won Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. He won the honor in 2023-24 and has been a finalist for the award in each of his seasons as head coach.

The Spartans finished the regular season with a 16-5-2 Big Ten and 25-7-2 overall record before losing to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.

The team is set for three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. MSU has not made the tournament for more than two straight seasons since it was in the tournament for 10-straight (1992–2002).

Augustine and Basgall are on the first team for consecutive seasons. Martone is the only freshman named to the first team.

Junior goaltender Trey Augustine

Augustine has earned back-to-back Big Ten Goaltender of the Year awards, becoming the second goaltender in Big Ten history to do so.

He leads the Big Ten across all major categories: goals-against average (2.08 GAA), save percentage (.929 SV%) and shutouts (3).

Augustine is also semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, for the third straight season. The award goes to the top goaltender in college hockey. The Richter Award will be announced at the NCAA championship game on April 11, 2026.

Senior defenseman Matt Basgall

Basgall was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.  He was a finalist for the award last season and is the second Spartan to earn the award. Former defenseman Artyom Levshunov won it in 2024. Levshunov currently plays for the Chicago Blackhawks.

The senior captain also received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Senior center Charlie Stramel

Stramel is having his best collegiate season yet. He holds the best on-ice rating in the conference with a plus-30 and leads the conference in faceoffs won with 461-52, more than second-best Gavin Morrissey from Wisconsin.

Stramel has marked a career-high 44 points this season, with 19 goals and 25 assists. He surpassed his previous career high of 28 points on Jan. 16.

Stramel ranks fifth in goals and points in the Big Ten. He is tied for first in the nation for game-winning goals with seven.

Freshman winger Porter Martone

Martone has led the team in goals for much of the season. He is first in goals (24) and fourth in points (47) in the Big Ten.

Martone is only the fourth player in Big Ten history to score 20 goals in conference play, and the second freshman to do so.

He holds a plus-27 on-ice rating and was the only freshman to make the Big Ten All-Freshmen Team.

Senior winger Daniel Russell

Russell received All-Big Ten Honorable mention.

He is a key component of the Spartans’ offense, leading the team with 28 assists, which is tied for fourth in the Big Ten. Russell set new career-bests in points and assists (39) during his senior season. His plus-29 ranks second in the conference, behind linemate Stramel.

Russell has been a top-line forward for the Spartans during the last four years.
