The scent of fresh renovations filled the air as students stepped inside the newly re-opened MSU Museum. A calm sense of curiosity and peace settled over them as they made their way to the front desk to check in for the "UNWIND Love" event.

Stephanie Palagyi, Director of Marketing and Communications at MSU Museum, spoke to the networking and socializing aspects of this series the MSU Museum hosts, “It’s a part of a series that is specifically for MSU students to give them an opportunity to relax and meet students across campus that they might not meet otherwise.”

The first event in the series, a silent disco, took place on Jan. 23, a little over a week after the Museum’s Jan. 14 re-opening.

Palagyi understood what it would take to make this re-opening event appealing to students. “The theme of this one is love, since it’s February. There will be all kinds of fun activities to create valentines for your friends, and there will be therapy dogs and different snacks and things and balloons,” Palagyi said.

A line formed inside the Museum’s lobby, slightly before the event’s start at 7:00 p.m. Shortly after, there was another rush as more students filed in. Before long, the small hallway to the left of the reception desk was bustling with students, all attending the event.

Environmental engineering senior Isabelle Brissette was at a museum event for the first time.

“I’ve never been to one of these events before, so I didn’t know what to expect. My friend and I had an MSU Museum event on our bucket list before graduating,” Brissette said.

The event took place on the second floor, where there was a wide hallway straight ahead from the staircase’s entrance, with tables lined up on either side offering embroidery stations.

There was a sign – pink, staying on par with the Valentine’s Day theme, with a red heart advertising donuts and hot cocoa just up ahead.

“Strange matter donuts and scones were a great snack,” Brissette said. “I think local businesses are the best, and bonus points for having gluten-free options.”

Many students attended the event and had trouble finding seating at the main tables. Some students checked out the embroidery stations or raffle boxes while waiting for a seat to open up.

On the other side of the room anthropology junior and MSU Museum employee Dani Middleton was overseeing a table of crafts and boardgames.

“The flowers, LEGOS, the heart things, the flowers, crochet and the popcorn movie night we tried to go with the theme. Everybody gets three raffle tickets when they come in, to try their chances, and then I said that if people tell me a joke I would give them more tickets because I wanted to have an interesting and fun night, and I’ve been told some very fun jokes,” Middleton said.

Wrapped boxes resembling piggy banks could be found near the kits. Students could feed their tickets in hopes of scoring an item.

“In March we’re going to have another silent disco – that one is in conjunction with UAB and it has a Charli XCX theme, so that should be really fun," Palagyi said. "And there’s always food, too – so “brat” [the album] and “brat” [the sausage] – the food is going to be cookout, bratwurst, macaroni and cheese and stuff like that."

That event, called "UNWIND BRATTY," will take place on Mar. 13, and while registration is required on the MSU Museum website, the event is entirely free.
