Michigan State gymnastics delivered one of its best performances of the season on Saturday night, defeating Ohio State 197.300-196.850. The Spartans are gaining momentum as they head into the final stretch of the regular season.
The meet stood out for an impressive floor rotation, where MSU achieved some of its highest individual scores of the year. Gabi Ortiz earned a 9.900 with a dynamic, controlled routine. Meanwhile, MaKayla Tucker led with an outstanding 9.950, one of the highest scores of the night. These strong finishes helped secure the victory and energized the home crowd.
Head coach Mike Rowe highlighted the team’s improvement and growing consistency as key takeaways.
"We’re really happy with the steady progress," Rowe said. "Going to bars and hitting a season high shows where this group is heading. Our depth is getting more consistent, and we’re starting to see people step up."
The uneven bars were another strong point for the Spartans. Clean routines and confident landings boosted the team total. Several athletes delivered solid performances, giving MSU valuable lineup depth as the postseason approaches.
Beam presented a few minor challenges, but Rowe noted that these issues were small and fixable, rather than a major concern.
"It was a little bit of a struggle on beam, but nothing we’re really worried about," he said. "There are just some things to clean up. Overall, we’re happy with where everyone is."
The meet also featured strong performances from athletes participating in limited events, providing important scoring depth. Rowe mentioned that ongoing internal competition has helped improve the team’s performance.
"That’s a tough position to put anyone in, especially those early lineup spots," Rowe said. "But once we see consistency and the scores they’re posting, it shows the strategy is working. Everybody’s working really hard, whether they’re in the lineup or not. They’re training like they’re trying to earn a spot, and that mindset helps the whole team."
With the team score reaching 197 and individual performances continuing to improve, MSU is peaking at the right time.
MSU is now focus on upcoming Big Ten competition, aiming to build on their consistency and carry that momentum into the postseason.
