Freshman winger Porter Martone has been named Second Star of the Week, following his first collegiate hat trick, released by the Big Ten conference this morning.
Martone led the conference in goal-scoring, finishing the week with four goals in No. 1 Michigan State hockey’s 4-2 and 8-2 wins over Notre Dame on Thursday and Friday.
Martone scored three goals on Friday night, marking his first career collegiate hat trick. He scored the game-winning goal in the second period, unassisted after creating a turnover with his physicality. He also added an empty-net insurance goal in Thursday night’s win.
“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to my line mates,” Martone said after Friday night’s win. “[Senior forwards] Charlie Stramel and Daniel Russell have been really good for me, kind of making the transition over to college. [They're] two seniors who have kind of been through it, the ups and downs of college hockey, and they really helped me. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing without those two, so a lot of credit goes to them.”
Martone’s performance moved him to 20 goals and 41 points on the season. He now ranks ninth in points and fourth in goals in the history of MSU freshmen. Martone leads the Spartans in goals and points.
Martone finished the week with a plus-four rating and collected his third Big Ten weekly award with this honor. He has been awarded Second Star twice and Third Star once. Martone was named Third Star following MSU’s first series against Notre Dame last November.
Martone was drafted sixth overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2025 NHL Draft. He arrived at MSU following the NCAA rule change that allowed Canadian Hockey League players to compete in college hockey.
