Following a conference-best performance of three goals and two assists, freshman forward Porter Martone was named the Big Ten’s Second Star of the Week.
Last Friday, Martone recorded two goals and two assists for a career-best four points in then–No. 2 Michigan State hockey’s 6-2 victory over Ohio State. The winger also scored the Spartans’ lone goal in a 2-1 loss the following day.
Martone has recorded points in all but three of his appearances this season, leading the Spartans with 14 goals and 25 points. He ranks second on the team in scoring, just behind senior forward Charlie Stramel, who has 26 points.
The Ohio State series was Martone’s first performance back after spending winter break at the IIHF World Juniors Championship. Martone captained Team Canada, leading them to a bronze medal.
"It's easy to be a leader when it goes your way," head coach Adam Nightingale said in reference to Martone. "I thought he dusted himself off there and had a heck of a game in the bronze, proud of him for that."
The Peterborough, Ontario-native was drafted sixth overall to the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2025 NHL Draft.
This is Martone’s second Big Ten honor of the season. He was named Third Star on Nov. 18, 2025, following MSU’s sweep of Notre Dame.
