Steeplechase obstacle set up at the north end of the track. Michigan State hosted the Spartan Invite, their first home meet since 2019, at Ralph Young Field on April 1-2, 2022.

Michigan State’s indoor track and field team turned the U-M Indoor Track and Field Building into a green-and-white showcase Saturday, winning nine events and recording multiple personal bests at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, demonstrating its range across every discipline of the meet.

The tone was set early in the men’s weight throw, where Michigan State athletes claimed four of the top five spots. Xavier Griffiths saved his best for last, recording a personal-best throw of 20.45 meters on his final attempt to win the event. The mark ranks seventh on MSU’s all-time list, a reminder that program history can be rewritten mid-competition.

Griffiths wasn’t alone. Dalton DeBeau followed closely with a PR of 19.50 meters, while Colby Marlock and Dillon Morlock rounded out the dominance in fourth and fifth.

On the women’s side, Elle Adrian delivered a moment that turned heads across the facility. Her season-best throw of 22.31 meters won the event and landed just four centimeters shy of her own school record.

The Morlock name surfaced again in the men’s shot put, as Dillon Morlock won the event with a throw of 18.31 meters, edging brother Colby by a razor-thin margin. Michigan State’s field dominance continued upward — literally — when Brady Schultz cleared 2.15 meters to win the high jump.

In the horizontal jumps, the Spartans completed a sweep. Carter Bissell led a 1-2-3 finish in the long jump, followed by Andrew Harding and Dylan Terryberry. Leila Barmore added her own flourish, backing up last week’s long jump win with a triple jump victory at 12.38 meters.

Taylor Pangburn stole the spotlight in the women’s mile, running a personal-best 4:46.95 to take first. She crossed the line with daylight behind her, while teammates Paige Marchant and Taylor Ewert added depth with top-five finishes.

The Spartans continued to add points in the middle distances, with Rachel Forsyth placing third in the 800 meters and sister Sarah Forsyth close behind. Olivia Millen posted a personal best to round out a race that showcased both speed and stamina. Sydnee Sinn followed suit in the 600 meters, recording a personal record on her way to a third-place finish.

Sophia Lucki added another win to the Spartan total in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 9:42.94, while Meghan Beute made it a one-two finish with a personal best.

On the men’s side, Cameron Cheetam brought the crowd to life in the 60-meter dash, blazing to first in 6.86 seconds. Logan Allen continued his strong indoor campaign with a runner-up finish in the 60-meter hurdles, steady and composed over the barriers.

By the end of the meet, Michigan State had done more than tally nine wins. The Spartans left Ann Arbor with confidence, consistency and a growing sense that this indoor season could be something special.

Michigan State returns to action Jan. 30-31 at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational in South Bend, and if Saturday was any indication, the Spartans are carrying strong momentum.
