MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo after winning against the University of Kentucky in the State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025.

The Michigan State University's Board of Trustees approved Friday a $1 million raise for men's basketball coach Tom Izzo.

Izzo, who has served as head coach since 1995, signed his most recent contract in 2022 — a five-year rolling deal with a $6.2 million annual salary.

The board's vote Friday will bring his yearly wage up to $7.2 million, making him the highest paid head men's basketball coach in the Big Ten conference.

MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz said the university has been discussing the raise for around a year and felt it was time to revisit his contract to "make sure that he knows how much we appreciate him."

Izzo "serves as much more than a basketball coach here at Michigan State," Guskiewicz added. "He's an incredible ambassador for the university and for the local community and for the state of Michigan, so it was very deserving."

In a press release, athletic director J Batt said "This new contract not only celebrates (Izzo's) legacy, it displays the department’s commitment to doing all we can to support him and the program’s championship dreams for years to come."

Izzo is currently in his 31st season as head coach of MSU and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

"I’m incredibly appreciative of the continued support from the Board of Trustees, President Guskiewicz and AD Batt," Izzo said in a press release. "With strong leadership and positive momentum throughout the University and the department, the pieces are in place for sustained success, and I’m as energized as ever to chase championships. We’re going to keep working tirelessly to make all Spartans proud."
