Over the weekend, No. 1 Michigan State hockey swept Notre Dame, defeating the Fighting Irish 4-1 on Friday night and 3-1 on Saturday night to remain undefeated in conference play. The pair of wins earned the Spartans two Big Ten Stars of the Week — junior netminder Trey Augustine and freshman forward Porter Martone.
Augustine earned First Star for the second-straight week, playing a crucial role in the Spartans’ weekend victories. The goaltender held the Irish to just two total goals upon facing 54 shots over the weekend.
The South Lyon, Michigan native was the team’s best player on Saturday, MSU coach Adam Nightingale said. He added that he’s been consistent, managed games well and didn’t give up second-chance shots over the weekend.
Augustine’s weekend performance was the best in the Big Ten, leading the conference in save percentage (.963) and goals-against average (1.01). He was the only goalie to maintain a GAA under 2.00. Augustine holds a 1.32 GAA and a .948 save percentage this season, ranking third in the NCAA.
The weekend victories marked Augustine’s 50th career wins at MSU, making him just one of four active goaltenders in Division I hockey to accomplish this feat. Augustine has now earned seven career Big Ten Star of the Week honors (4 First Stars, 3 Second Stars).
Martone earned Third Star for his first Big Ten weekly honor. The winger tied for the conference lead in goals over the weekend, scoring two in Game 1 and adding a third in the finale.
"He's a very smart player," Nightingale said, in reference to Martone. "I think where he's taken a step is just his condition. He's in way better shape than when he got here, right? And he's put on nine pounds and eight and a half of them are muscle, right? So, he's building his body through the season, which is tough to do, and I give him credit for committing to that."
Senior forward Charlie Stramel also tallied two assists on the weekend on two of Martone’s three goals against the Irish, Nightingale said that the first line has worked well for the Spartans. Martone leads the Green and White in scoring with 14 points (7-7—14) in the team’s first 10 games, while Stramel trails closely behind with five goals and eight assists for 13 points.
With this award, Martone became the first MSU freshman to earn a Star Award since sophomore forward Shane Vansaghi earned Third Star honors on Nov. 19, 2024.
