In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Ingham County Clerk's website announced that former candidates Steve Whelan and Chuck Grigsby are the newly elected members of East Lansing City Council.
The election comes at a time when East Lansing is deliberating its sanctuary city status, its state of policing and its growing budget woes.
Over 11,658 people voted in the election on Tuesday, according to unofficial results reported by the Ingham County Clerk website. Results will be confirmed later this week when voter demographics are released, East Lansing City Clerk Emily Gordon said.
Whelan won with 22.36% of the vote, earning 2,609 votes across all precincts. Grigsby followed closely in second with 20.01% of the vote, earning 2,335 votes across all precincts. Candidate Adam DeLay followed as third with 14.85% of the vote with 1,732 votes across all precincts, but did not qualify for a council seat.
Six total candidates campaigned for two open seats on East Lansing City Council this past election season, after council member Dana Watson and Mayor George Brookover announced they were not running for re-election.
Grigsby and Whelan will join current council members Erik Altmann, Mark Meadows and Kerry Ebersole Singh to form the five-person city council.
Following the election, the council will vote among themselves to decide which members will be designated mayor and mayor pro temp, though those two positions remain voting members of the council.
At a recent candidate forum hosted by ASMSU on MSU’s campus, Grigsby voiced that he would be open to accepting the mayoral position if selected.
Whelan, however, said he’d rather wait. "In the very beginning, there's so much to learn and grow, but after two years, I think I’d love (to)."
Alongside the city council election, residents also voted on a proposed Parks & Recreation millage. The proposal failed to pass with 61.12% voting no, earning 3,728 votes across all precincts.
Grigsby and Whelan will both serve out a four-year term until 2029.
