Junior middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig (9) spikes the ball during the matchup against Indiana University at the Breslin Center on Oct. 12, 2025.
Michigan State’s volleyball delivered a defensive clinic at Breslin Center on Sunday, defeating Indiana 3-0 to notch another win for themselves in the Big Ten play.
"I’m just really happy for them," said Head Coach Kristen Kelsay. "It’s tough to play a five-setter against Iowa and then less than 48 hours later come out and host a ranked team. I think the team is really good at staying present and seeing the battle in front of them."
The tone of the match was set early, with junior outside hitter Bianca Mumcular and senior opposite Evie Doezema leading the Spartans’ offensive charge in the first set. Michigan State raced out to a 7-3 lead behind a combination of kills from Mumcular, Zuzanna Kulig and Karolina Staniszewska. Indiana clawed back to narrow the gap to 14-11, but timely kills from Staniszewska and Kulig, combined with strong serving from Lia Schneider, helped MSU close out the set, 25-21.
Set two saw the Spartans’ defense shine. Sophomore Malayah Long’s precise setting orchestrated a series of kills from Doezema and Mumcular, while junior Ky Clayton added key aces. Michigan State out-blocked Indiana 9–7, forcing the Hoosiers to commit 28 attack errors, due to the pressure applied by the front line.
After a kill from Karolina Staniszewska pushed MSU to 22–19, Indiana called a timeout but couldn’t slow the momentum at Breslin. The Spartans closed the set 25–19 behind Mumcular’s powerful finish.
"We’ve been working on our blocking defense all week," said Kelsay. "For them to come out today and execute that against arguably the best offensive team in the Big Ten is a pretty special moment."
The third set reinforced MSU’s dominance. Indiana kept it close early at 4-4, but a sustained stretch of kills from Mumcular and Staniszewska, along with a solo block, put the Spartans in control. Indiana’s mounting errors — including a service fault on match point — sealed the sweep, 25-18.
"They had so much joy out there today on the court," Kelsay added. "I’m so excited for them to enjoy that validation for the hard work they’ve been doing all week."
With the win, Michigan State extends its record to 4-2 in conference play and continues to build momentum heading into a matchup against Nebraska on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
