Since 1971, George Blaha has been the voice of the Michigan State football team. However, he is best known for his play-by-play career with the Detroit Pistons.

Today he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Curt Gowdy Electronic Media Award for 2025. In honor of the late Curt Gowdy, this award recognizes sports broadcasters who have made significant contributions to the game of basketball.

In nearly five decades, Blaha has called over 3,400 regular-season games and more than 260 playoff games–including the Pistons’ five Eastern Conference Championships, five NBA Finals appearances, and all three NBA Championships (1989, ’90, and 2004).

Blaha has coined several distinctive catch phrases from behind the mic: “Count that baby and a foul!” “The long gun!” “Off the high glass!” The upcoming 2025-2026 season will mark his 50th anniversary with the Pistons.

MSU athletic director J Batt, head football coach Jonathan Smith and head basketball coach Tom Izzo congratulated Blaha in a statement put out by MSU Athletics.

“For five decades, your voice has provided the soundtrack to some iconic moments for the Pistons, and most importantly, the Spartans,” Batt said. “It's the ultimate honor for a broadcaster and a fitting tribute to your Hall of Fame career.

“It is an incredible and well deserved honor for your outstanding broadcasting career with the Detroit Pistons,” Smith said. “I'm so proud to have a Hall of Famer calling our Spartan Games.”

“I can't thank you enough for what you do for all of us, but to get the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame is an incredible honor,” Izzo said. “Keep up the good work. Me and you got years to go.”

Blaha’s history of recognition in sports broadcasting also includes the Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting (2002), Michigan Sports Broadcaster of the Year (2003, ‘07) and an induction into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (2008).
