Michigan State University settled with another shooting survivor in early May, according to documents obtained by The State News.

The plaintiff, MSU student Justin Bowman, originally asked for $50 million in damages. According to the document, Bowman was in Berkey Hall room 114 when the shooter opened fire on him and his classmates.

The suit argued that the shooting was preventable and that MSU “committed conduct amounting to gross negligence.” According to the document, Bowman relives the event every day and suffers mentally from post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and mental anguish.

The suit was filed on the day before the anniversary of the shooting earlier this year. The settlement comes around the same time three survivors also received combined settlements of $29.75 million.

“The university has worked in good faith to reach a legal resolution with those specifically affected by the incident. Our university community stands with them as they work to heal and recover from the tragedy,” university spokesperson Amber McCann wrote in a statement. “While the university cannot comment on any specific settlements, we truly hope a resolution can help provide some measure of relief, support and care to impacted individuals and their families."

Nora Hanna, the attorney representing Bowman, was unavailable for comment at time of publication.
