Former Broad MSU professor Iskandar Arifin has been sentenced to a minimum of two years in prison for possession of child pornography.

According to Ingham County Prosecuting attorney John Dewane, Arifin had counts #2-#6 dropped as a part of his plea deal, however he still plead guilty to one count of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material.

As a part of Arifin’s plea deal, his prison incarceration would not exceed 32 months on the minimum. “The sentencing guidelines recommended a sentence from 24 months to 40 months on the minimum," Dewane wrote in an email to The State News.

In early 2024, Iskandar Arifin was charged with three counts of aggravated child sexually abusive material and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Arifin was placed on administrative leave following the launch of a criminal investigation. His employment with the university officially ended on May 16, 2024.

“Mr. Arifin will have the opportunity to be paroled after he serves his minimum sentence of 24 months," Dewane said of the former professor's sentencing.

If placed on parole, Arifin could have conditions over where he could live, as well as be placed on the sex offender registry, which has reporting requirements.
