Alison Gaudreau, a former assistant vice president in Michigan State University’s Office of University Advancement, has filed a notice of intent to sue the university, alleging she was fired in retaliation for reporting sexual harassment and discrimination.

Gaudreau filed the notice June 9 in the Michigan Court of Claims — a required preliminary step before pursuing legal action against a public institution like MSU.

According to the filing, Gaudreau said she reported concerns raised by employees she supervised, in line with her responsibilities as a mandatory reporter.

Gaudreau said in the filing that her supervisor, Vice President for University Advancement Kim Tobin, took issue with the reports she submitted, expressing concern that they reflected poorly on the department’s leadership. Rather than supporting the reporting process, Tobin allegedly told Gaudreau she should have first worked with the department’s HR lead, Assistant Vice President Vivianne Robinson, to resolve the matters internally.

Although Robinson reportedly advised that reprimanding Gaudreau would violate university policy, Tobin continued to criticize her performance — questioning her communication skills and loyalty. Gaudreau described the criticism as abrupt, noting that she received a satisfactory performance review in September 2024 and had not been made aware of any issues prior to submitting the reports.

Gaudreau said she was terminated Jan. 17 and given no reason beyond being classified as an "at-will" employee, according to the filing. She is seeking at least $122,000 in lost wages and other damages.

Gaudreau’s attorney, Sarah Howard, was not available for comment at the time of publication.

MSU spokesperson Mark Bullion said, "The university does not comment on pending litigation."
