A former Michigan State University professor pled guilty to possessing child pornography, court records show.
Early last year, Iskandar Arifin was charged with three counts of aggravated child sexually abusive material and three counts of using a computer device to commit a crime.
On April 21, he pled guilty to only one of those counts — aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material — while the remaining five counts have been dismissed, court records show.
University spokesperson Amber McCann said the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety was "notified by the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office last March that Iskandar Arifin had been charged and arraigned on six counts of child pornography-related allegations."
Arifin was placed on administrative leave following the launch of a criminal investigation. His employment with the university officially ended on May 16, 2024.
The Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force led the investigation. According to case documents, the alleged offenses occurred in May 2022 in Meridian Township. No further details have been released.
The now 50-year-old served as a faculty member in MSU’s finance department starting in 2019. During his time at the university, he taught finance and investment classes.
His sentencing will take place June 11, a date set by Ingham County Circuit Judge Morgan Cole.
