Michigan State University announced Thursday that Alan Haller is no longer serving as vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics, effective May 11, 2025.
“I’m grateful for Alan’s leadership since I joined the university and appreciate the success our programs have seen under his leadership,” President Kevin Guskiewicz said in statement. “He is deeply committed to this university and has led with honesty and integrity.”
Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator Jennifer Smith has been named co-interim athletic director alongside MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo. The university said it will conduct a national search for a permanent athletic director.
“This is a pivotal time for college athletics, where innovation, effective communications and community engagement are more important than ever,” Guskiewicz said. “Our next athletic director will lead one of the nation’s more storied athletic programs, home to 23 varsity sports, a passionate fan base, a long legacy of academic and athletic excellence and, most importantly, an ambitious future.”
Haller, a former MSU football player and longtime university employee, had served as athletic director since September 2021. His departure marks another leadership change for MSU Athletics, which has undergone multiple transitions in recent years.
Michigan State has hired the search firm TurnkeyZRG to assist in finding its next athletic director, with an advisory committee set to work closely with Guskiewicz and the firm throughout the process.
