With postseason play looming and momentum building, Michigan State University men’s tennis delivered another marquee win Sunday afternoon.
The No. 31 Spartans blanked No. 24 Illinois 4-0 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, earning their third upset victory over a higher-ranked opponent this season — and doing so in convincing fashion.
"We came out pretty hot," senior Max Sheldon said. "Got breaks early on both one and three, and just kind of stayed the course there. So that was good to get a quick lead and stop their momentum."
MSU (13-7, 8-2 Big Ten) clinched the doubles point with dominant performances across the board, setting the tone early against a perennial conference contender.
In singles, freshman Mitchell Sheldon struck first. His 6-2, 6-1 win came so quickly, Max said he didn’t even realize it was over.
"I don’t know what Mitch did, but he’s off before my first set was even done," Max added. "So that was great, just getting another point on the board."
Freshman Vuk Radjenovic followed with another straight-sets win, and Max sealed the sweep with a gritty 7-5, 6-1 victory on court three.
"For me, I just feel like I’ve been here before," he said. "Four years, I’ve played plenty of third-setters and tight matches. So I kind of knew that my opponent hasn’t played as many — just use maturity and don’t let anything freak me out."
MSU men's tennis head coach Harry Jadun credited the team’s recent success — six wins in its last seven matches — to both health and consistency.
"Definitely getting healthy was the biggest thing," Jadun said. "And then also, on top of getting healthy, just the continuity of being able to play together. Keep the same doubles lineups together, keep the same order of the lineups. The guys know where they’re playing, know who they’re playing against — really, really helps."
Jadun also emphasized how crucial the doubles point has been all season.
"That’s been a huge area of focus for us for, honestly, the past two or three months, and it’s starting to really take shape now," he said. "You start working on things, but you don’t really see the fruition until, you know, two months, three months later. So the guys did a great job."
Looking ahead, the Spartans hit the road for a tough West Coast trip with matches against No. 30 USC and No. 27 UCLA — followed by a high-stakes regular season finale against rival Michigan.
"The season kind of chips away at you," Jadun said. "It’s a long season, a lot of travel … and then you’ve got to wake up early and go to class. So just trying to stay fresh, treat every match like it’s the first match of the year, and every point like it’s the only point that matters."
With the postseason just around the corner, MSU’s strong finish to the regular season has set the stage for what could be a defining stretch. Behind a veteran core and rising young talent, the Spartans appear locked in — and ready for whatever comes next.
