The most decorated netminder in USA IIHF history, Trey Augustine, continues to build his legacy.
Michigan State University hockey sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine has been named a finalist for the AAU Sullivan Award, recognizing the nation’s top amateur athlete at the collegiate and Olympic levels.
Augustine joins Jeff Lerg, the hero of MSU’s 2008 national championship team, as just the second Spartan goaltender to reach the AAU Sullivan Award semifinalist stage.
A cornerstone of Team USA’s U20 World Juniors squads, Augustine led the team to back-to-back gold medals in 2024 and 2025 — the first in USA Hockey history. The Detroit Red Wings prospect also holds a 2023 U20 bronze, along with U18 silver (2022) and gold (2023) medals.
The youngest starter in college hockey, Augustine has appeared in 27 of 34 games, posting a .925 save percentage — the highest by an MSU goaltender since 2014-15 — and a 2.09 goals-against average, the program’s best by a starter since Lerg’s 1.95 GAA in 2005-06. He also holds the second-fewest losses in NCAA hockey this season.
Beyond the AAU Sullivan, Augustine is also a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award (nation’s top college goaltender) and received votes for the Hobey Baker Award, given to NCAA hockey’s most outstanding player.
Augustine and the Spartans return to action Saturday, March 15, hosting Notre Dame in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. at Munn Ice Arena.
