Karsen Dorwart came to Michigan State University as an undrafted free agent, having put up 25 points in 61 games for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League.
The junior forward made an immediate impact with the Spartans, scoring 27 points in 38 games during his freshman year. Recruited by head coach Adam Nightingale, Dorwart quickly developed into a key player alongside teammate and friend, junior forward Daniel Russell.
Now signed to a two-year entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, Dorwart is the first member of the 2024-2025 MSU hockey squad to ink an ELC.
In his freshman campaign, Dorwart was named the team’s Outstanding Rookie and earned a spot on the watchlist for the Tim Taylor National Rookie of the Year award. With 27 points, he ranked third on the team, second in goals with 10. Despite not being highly recruited, Dorwart credits Nightingale’s commitment to developing his talent, which propelled him to elite status.
Dorwart’s sophomore year began with a letter on his jersey, as he was named one of three alternate captains. He also earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors and Academic All-Big Ten recognition. He set career highs with 15 goals and 19 assists, amassing 34 points.
His junior season started with an injury that kept him out of the first series against Lake Superior State University. But once he returned, Dorwart found his rhythm, scoring his first goal of the season in mid-November against Notre Dame. He finished his MSU career with 31 points in his final season and 104 career points.
Following MSU’s heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Cornell, Dorwart is among the Spartans rumored to sign NHL contracts. With MSU losing talent to the pros, the team’s future looks promising as more commitments are expected. Dorwart will report immediately to the Flyers, ready to make his mark in the NHL.
