An individual is in custody after a social media threat was made against Michigan State University earlier Wednesday, according to a statement from the university's Department of Police and Public Safety.
The department was made aware of the anonymous threat which originated on Snapchat around 2 p.m., according to the statement.
"MSU Police officers acted immediately to identify the person(s) responsible for the threat," the statement said. "MSU DPPS was able to contact a person of interest and currently have them in custody. We can confirm that there is no current threat to our community."
The threat, which was posted to the MSU 2028 page on Snapchat, referenced the 2023 campus shooting that killed three students and injured five.
"There’s going to be another shooting at michigan state," the post read. "I’m so glad, this school definitely deserves it and everyone here should die."
A later statement from the department said the subject is an 18-year-old MSU student who was located in Case Hall.
After further investigation at MSU Police headquarters, she was transported to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, according to the statement. MSU Police are now seeking a felony charge through the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for a violation of MCL - Section 750.543p, or "Internet or telecommunications or electronic device prohibited use."
"We take these matters extremely seriously," said department spokesperson Nadia Vizueta. "We did have a team using all resources to investigate it."
