Spartans are making bracelets throughout UAB movie night at Brody on Feb. 12, 2025.
On Wednesday, Feb. 12, attendees arrived at Michigan State University’s Brody Hall to participate in a "Blockbusters & Bracelets" event.
Hosted in collaboration with MSU’s University Activities Board (UAB) and Residence Halls Association’s (RHA) Campus Center Cinemas (CCC), "Blockbusters & Bracelets" aimed to create a welcoming, Valentine’s Day-themed environment to gather and celebrate.
During the event, attendees were encouraged to create 90s themed bracelets and watch the romcom "10 Things I Hate About You."
Elementary education sophomore and UAB Events Coordinator Gabby Gillespie said the event was created for everyone to have fun ahead of the holiday on Friday.
"It was meant to be like a Palentine’s, Galentine’s Day type event that's just meant for everybody to have fun, relax, all those kind of things," Gillespie said.
The event was in hosted in collaboration with RHA due to the greater ability to bring people together, Gillespie said.
"We decided to create this event because Campus Center Cinemas on campus, they've been wanting to do a movie night, we've been wanting to do a movie night," Gillespie said. "It was a great way to come together and just reach out all across campus, with them being in south, us partly in north, and all of our Instagrams and posts, being able to reach almost everybody. It was a really great way to help bring more people and community together."
Digital storytelling sophomore and Director of Media and Entertainment for the Residence Halls Association Kyan Camarillo said the collaboration is important to him because of the opportunity to spread the word about the CCC.
"I really like being able to showcase all of the movies that we are able to show," Camarillo said. "RHA OnDemand is the website that the RHA provides for us. It's our on-campus streaming service. It's free to all students who are connected to MSU Wi-Fi, and I really like being able to show them this resource exists to everyone here that's on campus."
Biochemistry senior Anna LoPresti was in attendance because multiple aspects of the event piqued her interest.
"It stood out to me to me because, first of all, I like the movie, and second of all, it's just like an excuse to get out in the middle of the week and just kind of enjoy yourself and make some bracelets, have some fun, be with your friends," LoPresti said.
Similarly, zoology senior Abby Deming decided to attend "Blockbusters & Bracelets" due to the bonding aspect the event had to offer.
"My friend actually told me about it, and we thought it'd be fun to do together, just have a relaxing night," Deming said.
For Camarillo, bringing people together is what stands out about social events like this one.
"I really like seeing people get together," Camarillo said. "I really like creating sort of an atmosphere where people can relax and where people can just come together and make new friends and memories as well."
Gillespie said watching students gather and participate in the event, despite circumstances like bad weather, was the highlight of the event.
"We have heart-shaped glasses that are in pink and red, and everyone's wearing them," Gillespie said. "I think it's cute, especially when everyone takes them off, they're like, 'It's so bright in here, it's not red anymore!' I think it's been probably my favorite part for today."
Camarillo hoped attendees left the event feeling connected with the other guests.
