On Thursday, Feb. 20, MSU’s University Activities Board (UAB) hosted a Stuff-A-Stuff event at the Engineering Building.
In collaboration with the MSU Bug Club, Stuff-A-Stuff presented an opportunity for students to create and take home their own stuffed squirrel, as well as learn more about the club and explore the world of insects.
Entomology senior and the publicity/outreach and secretary of the MSU Bug Club Josh Striegle said Stuff-A-Stuff created a chance for the club to share their passion about bugs.
"I am super passionate about hosting outreach events, because I think that bugs are (a) very misunderstood part of our natural world, and they're facing a lot of dire consequences with climate change, habitat destruction, urbanization, stuff like that," Striegle said. "Our goal is to really get people to kind of know more about this, this part of the world that's really misunderstood, and get a better appreciation of them."
Streigle said Stuff-A-Stuff provided an opportunity for the Bug Club to explore this topic with people who might not normally engage with it.
"You're not often gonna get people to really explore (this topic), unless you go into a zone where you find them rather than them finding you," Streigle said. "You really have to be proactive and kind of find people and meet them where they are to be able to share this passion of ours."
Masters student in student affairs and graduate assistant with UAB Justin Babbitt said the event aimed to create a space for students to bond with each other.
"It gives students a very nice space to gather and build community over something very simple," Babbitt said. "It's cute, fun and something cool to do for students when they're out of class."
For attendees like experience architecture sophomore Katelyn Greene, Stuff-A-Stuff provided just that, along with something to take home.
"(I) absolutely love the squirrel, I'm so glad I get to take it home," Greene said. "It's like the cutest little souvenir."
The main goal of the event for both UAB and the Bug Club was to spread joy on campus. Striegle said he hopes the event provided an opportunity to get away from the "burden" of school.
Similarly, Babbitt said he hopes Stuff-A-Stuff created an atmosphere where students were able to bond with one another.
"I hope they're able to at least meet a new person, talk to a new person, make new friends, and just find time to take care of themselves," Babbitt said. "I know there is a lot happening in the world all the time, so I'm hoping that people can come to this event and just have a good time, spend time with friends, meet someone new, and take a break from class and work and life and just come hang out."
