Men's basketball: Spartans storm back to defeat Oregon
After being down 14 points at halftime against the Oregon Ducks, the Spartans pulled away in the second half to win 86-74 on Saturday.
The win marked Tom Izzo’s 353rd career Big Ten victory, tying Indiana’s Bob Knight for the most in conference history.
Freshman guard Jase Richardson also hit a milestone, recording a career-high 29 points.
"Jase just did an incredible job," Izzo said post-game. "To take 13 shots and get 29 points is very, very, very efficient."
Michigan State sits second in the Big Ten and No. 9 in the national rankings.
MSU will stay in East Lansing to face Indiana on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 9 p.m.
Gymnastics: MSU hands Minnesota first loss of the season
On Saturday, the team took on Minnesota at Jenison Field House, where they won with a score of 197.475-196.800.
Michigan State handed Minnesota its first loss of the season, with junior Nikki Smith securing the all-around title with a season-best 39.575.
The Spartans posted a 49.275 on beam, gaining a 0.500-point lead before sealing the win with a 49.375 on floor.
Michigan State is now ranked sixth nationally and fifth in the Big Ten.
MSU will travel to Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 15, for an 8 p.m. matchup.
Hockey: Spartans dominate Michigan to claim Duel in the D trophy
The team took on rivals, University of Michigan, on Friday in East Lansing and lost 2-1 after the Wolverines scored a late goal with a minute remaining.
"We’re disappointed but never discouraged," head coach Adam Nightingale said post-game.
Staying true to his word, the team had a rematch at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday for the second game of the series. They won the Duel in the D Trophy with a score of 6-1 to acquire the accolade for the second consecutive year.
Michigan State remains second nationally, trailing only Boston College, and holds the top spot in the Big Ten.

Michigan State will have a bye week before returning to action at home against Penn State on Feb. 21 and 22.
Track and field: two Spartans break school records
At the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor on Saturday, two Spartans set new school records in throwing events.
In the women’s weight throw, senior Elle Adrian took first place with a 22.35m throw, breaking Beth Rohl’s 2013 school record.
In women’s shot put, sophomore Jessica Stieb finished second and broke her own school record with a personal-best throw of 16.87m.
The team had a strong showing in Ann Arbor, recording multiple top-three finishes.
Michigan State will compete in the Windy City Invitational in Chicago on Feb. 14-15.
Women’s basketball: Spartans fall to rivals at home
The women’s team took on University of Michigan for a battle at the Breslin Center where it lost 71-61.
In their previous meeting, MSU recorded its largest margin of victory over Michigan in Ann Arbor. This time, the Wolverines turned the tables.
"It felt like we would get a stop, turn them over, and then empty possession, empty possession, empty possession," head coach Robyn Fralick said postgame. "So, that’s frustrating, especially as you’re chipping away back into the game."
Veterans struggled to show up, the Spartans couldn’t generate and land shots in the second quarter and eventually feel too far behind to redeem themselves.
Michigan State is ranked No. 20 nationally and sits sixth in the Big Ten standings.
MSU will look to rebound against Wisconsin at the Breslin Center on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
Softball: MSU secures first win of the season at Candrea Classic
Michigan State softball opened its season this past weekend at the Candrea Classic.
The Spartans began their season Thursday against Arizona, suffering a 15-0 loss after a seven-run second inning put them in a deep hole. They kept it closer in game two but ultimately fell 10-9.
On Friday, MSU faced No. 11 Alabama, dropping the first game 6-2. The struggles continued against Western Michigan, as the Spartans failed to score in an 8-0 loss.
MSU bounced back on Saturday, defeating Western Michigan 9-1 for its first win of the season.
Michigan State is unranked nationally and sits at No. 15 in the Big Ten.
MSU will take on Longwood in Athens, Georgia, on Friday, Feb. 14, at 10:30 a.m.
Men’s tennis: hard-fought loss to Boise State
Michigan State men’s tennis fell 4-3 to Boise State on Sunday, following a six-spot drop in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
Looking to prove itself, MSU battled hard against BSU. After securing the doubles point, the Spartans entered the singles matches tied 3-3 and turned to freshman Matthew Forbes — recently named Big Ten Freshman of the Week — to clinch the win.
Forbes fought hard but fell in the final two sets, losing 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Michigan State is now ranked No. 22 in the ITA rankings and 11th in the Big Ten.
MSU will travel to New York to face Cornell on Sunday, Feb. 23, aiming to bounce back from its recent losses.
Wrestling: tough weekend with back-to-back losses
Michigan State wrestling lost 27-12 to Northwestern on the road Friday night.
The Spartans continued their road trip to Madison, falling 25-12 to Wisconsin on Sunday.
Redshirt freshman Max Vanadia won both of his matches, extending his win streak to three and standing out as a bright spot for the team.
MSU remains unranked nationally and sits at No. 14 in the Big Ten.
MSU will face Rutgers in New Jersey on Friday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m.
Despite some setbacks, Michigan State University athletics had several standout moments over the weekend, from record-breaking performances in track and field to a dominant hockey win over Michigan.
With key matchups ahead, MSU teams aim to build on their successes and recover from recent losses as they continue their seasons.
