Michigan State University ice hockey is preparing for a critical Big Ten series against Ohio State this week, but they’ll once again take the ice without captain Red Savage. Savage has been officially ruled out for the rest of the season due to an upper body injury.
"At the end of the day, I respect what he was trying to do to continue to play,” said Head Coach, Adam Nightingale. “He’s got to get healthier. He’s going to be playing this game for a long time, so he’s flying out to get some work done. We’re going to miss him, for sure. He’s our captain and he’ll still be our leader."
In his second season with the Spartans, Savage has been instrumental in helping MSU build a competitive program. Beyond his five goals and six assists this season, his leadership has played a crucial role in fostering the team culture that underpins Michigan State’s success.
While the loss of Savage is undoubtedly significant, the Spartans remain focused on the road ahead. With eight games left in the regular season before postseason play, the team is determined to adapt and push forward.
"Injuries are part of any team sport,” said Nightingale. “It’s about how you respond to it. We’ve got more than enough in our room to get the job done. This is an opportunity for other guys to step up and take advantage of their chance."
Although he won’t be on the ice, Savage will continue to support his teammates off it. Since the injury, he has attended every practice, contributing to the team wherever possible.
"[Savage] finds ways to lift guys up,” Said Nightingale. “Whether it’s from the stands, watching on TV when we’re on the road, or just being present. Leadership doesn’t stop when you’re injured."
Looking ahead, the Spartans are taking a one game at a time approach. The series against Ohio State presents a major challenge, as the Buckeyes are also vying for position in the tightly contested Big Ten standings. Despite MSU’s five-point cushion, Nightingale emphasized that the focus remains on each game rather than the standings.
As the Spartans gear up for this critical Big Ten series against Ohio State, the absence of Red Savage will surely be felt. However, the team remains focused and determined to meet the challenge. The two game series begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, with the second game set for 7 p.m. on Friday, January 31, both in Columbus, Ohio.
