MSU women’s volleyball head coach Leah Johnson has stepped down after three seasons with the program.

MSU Athletics announced Monday evening that MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller and Johnson mutually agreed on the decision, effective immediately.

"We are committed to finding the right coach to guide Michigan State in the best volleyball conference in the country," Haller said in a press release.

Johnson came to East Lansing ahead of the 2022 season, leading MSU to the most wins by a first-year head coach since 1974. That season, the Spartans improved in many categories from previous seasons, including more kills and assists per set, fewer setting errors and more digs.

In 2023, Johnson and the Spartans picked up 17 wins, the most by the program since 2019. Michigan State also had nine conference wins, the most since 2017.

This past season, however, MSU posted a 13-18 record and went 6-14 in the Big Ten. Overall, Johnson's team went 43-50 and 19-41 in the Big Ten.

Just short of three years after Johnson left Illinois State to head MSU's program, the Missouri native is on the move again.
