A major theme of 2024’s music industry was women dominating the media. Chappell Roan took over TikTok while performing at music festivals, Taylor Swift’s tour continued to have its place online and Charli XCX created the "Brat Summer" trend that shaped the season .
The impact these women had on the year has been well reflected in the nominations for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Beyoncé leads the pack with 11 total nominations. She is followed by Billie Eilish and Charli XCX who both have seven nominations. Swift, Roan and Sabrina Carpenter follow with six nominations each. Post Malone and Kendrick Lamar are also within the ranks for most nominations.
Packaging freshman Lucas Goodman made note of the popularity of these artists. Following the Lamar and Drake drama, Goodman admitted he is primarily a rap fan, but that didn’t stop him from hearing about these female pop artists. He made note of albums like Sabrina Carpenter’s "Short n’ Sweet" and Charli XCX’s "Brat."
"I definitely think there was a surge of certain pop albums," Goodman said.
Advertising junior Maria Murphy spent this year watching her favorite artists make big strides in their careers. She followed along by following news sources like "Pophive" on social media.
"I’m a music nerd," Murphy said.
Murphy has been keeping up this year with the Grammy nominations and does most years. Her excitement for this year’s awards comes from being a fan of many of the nominated artists, specifically Charli XCX and Chappell Roan. Increasing female nominations is a trend she has been noticing.
"I feel like there has been more female nominees in the last five years," Murphy said. "It’s really cool to see women represented more."
Journalism junior Sedona Bassler also saw the impact of the mainstream female artists that dominated in 2024, especially on social media. Normally getting content about Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan and other more folk-country artists, even Bassler's social media was not immune to the pop craze of the summer.
"I don’t really listen to a lot of her music, but I did see a lot about Sabrina Carpenter," Bassler said. "I think that her social media presence is really fun. I know with her tour she’s had a lot of things going around on social media."
Murphy appreciates seeing this shift in the industry and is not alone in that feeling. Bassler listens to a lot of female artists and is happy to see them getting their recognition. Bassler is more inclined to country music and named Megan Moroney as someone she’s a fan of.
"I think it really just is good that female artists are finally getting recognized for making such awesome music," Bassler said.
