The future multicultural center is underconstruction at the intersection of Farm Lane and N Shaw Lane on Oct. 29, 2024. The area surrounding the site was evacuated and cordoned by emergency services due to a natural gas leak.

Michigan State University sent an alert Tuesday afternoon instructing people to "Please avoid the area of Shaw Lane and Farm Lane due to a gas leak."

An update sent less than a half hour after the initial alert said "East Lansing Fire Department is on scene with MSU Police and Consumer’s Energy investigating the gas leak."

According to the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety spokesperson Nadia Vizueta, the leak occurred due to an accidental hit of a gas pipe by the construction crew on site. No injuries were reported from the crew and Consumers Energy were also present to assess and handle the damage and leak.

The pipe was managed and the gas leak closed off at about 2 p.m. by Consumers Energy. No subsequent traffic accidents or cases of student illness have been reported.

When routing for bus commutes on campus, students can expect delays to lines 24 and 26 until 9 p.m. due to rerouting to avoid the area, according to the Apple Maps app.

"The impacted area has been evacuated. No other evacuations are required at this time. Please continue to avoid the area of Shaw Lane and Farm Lane until otherwise notified," the latest alert said.

MSU spokesperson Mark Bullion said that "classes have not been impacted" as a result of the gas leak, adding that the city of East Lansing "has been notified."

MSU Spokesperson Emily Guerrant said "we are continuing to evaluate" and that "road closures are happening to allow crews to deal with the leak."

40 minutes after the initial alert, students living in the River Trail and Mason-Abbot-Snyder-Phillips neighborhoods received an email instructing all residents on the west side of these building to close windows to their dorm rooms.

"Due to the proximity of the leak and out of an abundance of caution we are asking that if you live on the West side of the building, please shut your windows until we receive all clear from through the notification system," Assistant Director of Residence Education, Jarrod Becht, said in the email.

Political science-prelaw freshman Ndeye Thiam was tending a Harris-Walz campaign booth by the bridge on Farm Lane and said the gas leak affected the table's foot traffic.

"It was so busy and now we have like three students per minute," Thiam said.

CATA spokesperson Lolo Robinson said for safety concerns, all buses on campus suspended service with news about the leak and remained in place while awaiting updates. They received the all-clear at about 2 p.m., from which they resumed service as normal.

CATA was notified at approximately 2:20-2:30 p.m.of a closure at the intersection of Abbott and Burcham. East Lansing Fire Department Deputy Chief Mark Koonter confirmed the closure was due to another accidental gas line break that occurred during utility work.

Bus line 26 was delayed about one hour due to the secondary leak, according to Robinson.
