On Wednesday afternoon, students will have the opportunity to speak with the four Board of Trustees candidates on this year’s ballot via a virtual event hosted by the Associated Students of Michigan State University.
The Oct. 16 event will comprise of two separate webinars, each one corresponding with each open seat.
The first meeting will host Mike Balow (R) and Thomas Stallworth (D) and begins at 4 p.m. The second session will host Rebecca Bahar-Cook (D) and Julie Maday (R) and begins at 5:15 p.m.
ASMSU President Connor Le said both webinars will feature a few predetermined questions prepared by ASMSU. Each candidate will have one to two minutes to respond to the questions, which are designed to give students a baseline of the candidates wish to accomplish if elected.
Students will then have the opportunity to submit their own questions to moderators, some of which will be selected for the candidates to respond to.
"The Board of Trustees are probably one of the most influential boards at MSU that look over student policy and conduct," Le said. "Making sure that students know about the candidates, what their policies are, what they hope to do with a trustee seat if they win is important."
Lily Wenkel, the vice president of government affairs of ASMSU who helped organize the event with Le, said students should attend this event to ensure their voices are heard.
"We want to make sure that we have a seat at the table, that people are acknowledging how we feel and how we think that the university can help the students better," Wenkel said.
The event will be purely informational, allowing people to get to know the candidates and hear them speak on various issues, she said.
"It is not a debate," Wenkel said.
In order for students to ask questions, they must register as a participant before the webinar.
