Michigan State University women's soccer players communicate with one another on plays against Xavier University at DeMartin Soccer Stadium on Sept. 1, 2024.

Following the start of Big Ten play, which saw the MSU women's soccer team handle Maryland 5-0 in College Park last Thursday, MSU retained its spot as the No. 5 team in the US Soccer Coaches Poll Tuesday.

This marks the third consecutive week the Spartans have sat in the No. 5 spot. MSU's ranking is a clear indication of the program's threat to contend down the stretch this winter.

In non-conference play, the Spartans battled to draw against the University of Arkansas, which currently shares the No. 3 spot with Duke and earned a 2-1 victory against No. 16 Notre Dame.

Head Coach Jeff Hosler has the program at its peak, however, the Spartans have room to improve and fulfill their potential.

Leading scorers graduate transfers Emily Mathews (five goals, one assist) and Meg Hughes (four goals, four assists) have only played eight competitive games under Hosler and continue to look better with each passing match. Graduate midfielder Justina Gaynor has played a crucial role for Hosler’s side and often looks like a pro amongst amateurs with her composure in the center of the park.

Sophomore midfielder Bella Najera, reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, has four goals and two assists through eight appearances this season.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday, Sept. 19 at DeMartin Field, where they'll host the University of Nebraska. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will stream on Big Ten Plus.
