Michigan State field hockey has lost its first two games in conference play against No. 6 Ohio State and on Monday, No. 9 Michigan.

In the Big Ten home opener against its heated rival, MSU lost 3-0 Monday to the red-hot Wolverines. Michigan was dominant in the match, controlling the tempo and possession from start to finish.

Michigan extended its winning streak to six games and its shutout streak to three games.

Michigan fired six shots — three on goal — in the first five minutes of the first quarter. Michigan scored its first goal at the 7:30 mark from redshirt junior forward Abby Tamer. However, after the Wolverines' ferocious start, the Spartans held them to two shots for the rest of the quarter.

MSU couldn't get anything going in the first quarter, totaling just one shot that came with 15 seconds left. On defense, MSU goalie Lyra Gavino had three saves in the first quarter.

The second and third quarters showed the same trends for both teams as Michigan continued its offensive attack. Michigan fired six shots across both quarters with goals coming from freshman back Eva Bernardy and graduate forward Lora Clarke on a penalty goal.

MSU had one shot in the second quarter and two shots in the third quarter as they struggled to reach Michigan's side of the field. MSU goalie Lyra Gavino had three more saves in the second quarter and one save in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, MSU was more aggressive on offense, taking seven shots, with three of them on goal. However, it didn't materialize to points as MSU ended up scoreless in the quarter. Senior midfielder Ellie Rutherford had two of those shots. Freshman midfielder Carmen Pucheta, senior midfielder Maddie Lawlor and sophomore forward Brynn Shaffer all had one shot on goal.

MSU is now on a 13-game losing streak against its in-state rival and 4-27-1 against Michigan since 2001. The Spartans have now lost two straight as they look to get back on track in Muncie, IN against Ball State on Sept. 29th.
