Michigan State's women's basketball was selected as a 9-seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament's Albany 1 Region, entering the tournament for the first time since 2021 when the Spartans lost to Iowa State in the first round.
The Spartans will face 8-seed University of North Carolina in the first round in Columbia, South Carolina. The Tar Heels (19-12 overall, 11-7 in ACC play) have won against multiple national contenders such as North Carolina State and ACC Tournament Champions Notre Dame.
Both teams have only met three times in the two team's history and the Tar Heels won the last matchup 62-53 in 2014.
Michigan State (22-8 overall,12-6 in Big Ten play) won its last five games of the regular season and finished fourth in the Big Ten. The Spartans ended the season ranked second in offense in the Big Ten, averaging 83.7 points per game and were sixth in defense, only allowing 67.3 points per game. Under Fralick this season, the Spartans have won their most games in a single season, a feat they haven't reached since 2015.
Michigan State and the University of North Carolina will play at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina on Friday, March 22 at 11:30 a.m. ESPN will air the game.
