Michigan State University is seeking community input on a memorial for the Feb. 13, 2023 campus shooting that killed three and injured five students

“The permanent memorial will serve as a central location for families, loved ones, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to gather or visit alone — in the way that makes the most sense for them — to reflect, grieve and honor those lost, injured and all impacted by Feb. 13,” the press release said.

MSU set aside $300,000 of the $2 million donated to the Spartan Strong Fund, which was created after the shooting to support those most impacted, for the permanent memorial.

A committee of students, faculty, staff and community members will “guide the process of establishing a memorial in honor and remembrance of those we lost,” according to the memorial planning webpage.

The university will hold focus groups this month to hear community feedback on what that reflection place should look like.

In-person sessions will be held at:

  • MSU Demonstration Hall on March 13, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and March 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Hannah Community Center on March 13, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and March 14, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Virtual focus groups will be held on March 19 and 20 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The deadline to register is March 17.

Community members can also fill out a survey to provide feedback. It closes March 31.

MSU will send a request for artists' proposals by the end of the semester. A final selection will be made, with community input, by fall 2024, according to the website.

Construction of the memorial will begin in spring 2025.
