The Michigan State Football team has announced the hiring of Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith as their next head coach, the program announced Saturday afternoon pending approval of the Board of Trustees.

Athletic Director Alan Haller made the decision to clean house following the conclusion of the season for MSU and a 42-0 loss to No. 11 ranked Penn State Friday night and all members of MSU’s coaching staff have also been relieved of their duties on Saturday afternoon, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Jonathan Smith, who has led Oregon State to new heights during his tenure over the past six seasons, has been named Michigan State University’s 26th head football coach.
He led the Beavers, who were ranked as high as 11th in the College Football Playoff rankings this season, to an 8-4 record in the regular season and their third straight bowl appearance, a first for the program since 2006-09. OSU has gone 25-13 the past three seasons under Smith, including a No. 17 ranking in 2022 and a win over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Interim head coach Harlon Barnett made his best case to remain the head coach for MSU following the team's loss to Penn State, but his tenure will end will end with a 2-8 record.
