Michigan State University's Broad Art Museum recently announced that it will be opening up a research center on Nov. 10. The new space, called The Center for Object Research and Engagement, or CORE, will feature a “wide range of artworks that span 5,000 years of history, offering a portal to different time periods and cultures," according to a museum press release.
The CORE includes tools and stations to learn more about the work and research, as well as 3D-printed replicas of art available to touch and “scent jars inviting visitors to experience art through smell and its relationship to memory.”
MSU Broad Art Museum Interim Director Steven Bridges said in the press release that he believes The CORE is extremely important for the museum and MSU in general, as well as those who experience all of its exhibits and artworks.
“With the opening of The CORE, the museum’s collection will be centered as foundational to the museum’s future activities, as well as to its role on campus and in our community,” Bridges said. “The incredible breadth of knowledge and access to a wide range of cultural histories as offered by the collection will now be a permanent feature of the museum, enriching the lives of the diverse communities we serve — now and for posterity.”
The CORE’s grand opening will mark the 11th anniversary of the MSU Broad Art Museum. It will act as a fresh start to exhibits and a look into the past from how far the museum has come.
With the unveiling of The CORE, the museum will honor the many people who contributed to the collection over the years, as well as those who worked to create the building and this new space.
Art history sophomore Makenna Monteiro has worked at the museum for three months and is excited about the center's opening. She said it’s a good opportunity for the museum to “dig a little bit more into art historical” work.
“MSU has such a vast collection of items from even the Bronze Age, so just bringing all of those into one of our most accessible resources … provides a lot of access for folks to art that they may not be able to see at a museum that they have to pay for,” Monteiro said. “Using that collection to advance education (is important). Part of the goal of The CORE is that it’s going to be interactive, and there’s going to be a lot of learning opportunities for people who are visiting.”
Monteiro said The CORE is a great advancement in education, research and engagement with visitors. With the new center, she said, visitors are encouraged to expand their experiences of history and art and spend more time understanding each artwork and exhibit.
“It’s a great opportunity for students and the public to see more art history,” Monteiro said.
