The East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, is investigating a shooting that occurred at around 11:50 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, near Coolidge Road and Saginaw Street, according to a press release sent to The State News on Sept. 26, at 2:20 p.m. from the ELP.
Michigan State University Chief of Police Chris Rozman said a university alert was not sent out to students because police did not have credible information that the shooting took place near campus.
"There is no threat to campus, and there never was a threat to campus at any point," Rozman said. "(If there were), that is something that we would have notified our community about."
Rozman said MSUPD was not involved.
At 12:52 a.m., an alert was sent out on local public safety notification app Everbridge Nixle from East Lansing Public Safety, stating the ELPD was investigating a shooting that occurred on MSU's campus at E. Grand River and M.A.C. Avenue.
However, Rozman said, ELPD later determined that the incident occurred an eight-minute drive away at Coolidge Road and Saginaw Street. He said this was due to a delay in reporting.
The press release said that police were notified 14 minutes later at 12:04 a.m., on Sunday, Sept. 24 from when the event happened. In the statement, ELPD said it was investigating a possible road rage incident that resulted in one individual getting shot.
"The situation is always difficult because you have to kind of go by the information that you have at the time," Rozman said. "It's important to understand what the police departments knew at the time, so there was not only a delay but a confusion in the location."
The individual was sent to Sparrow Hospital and faced no life-threatening Injuries.
“The suspect is a white male, in his mid- to late-20s, with long, blond hair worn in a bun with a mustache and medium-length blond beard,” the press release said. “The suspect’s vehicle was a silver, four-door sedan, possibly Toyota, with an unknown Michigan license plate.”
ELPD also noted that the public is not in any immediate danger.
The State News reached out to the East Lansing Police Department several times but received no response.
