Survivor of the Feb. 13 MSU shooting Nate Statly is said to be “making progress in his recovery,” according to an update from his brother Josh in a message posted to Twitter and Nate’s GoFundMe page.

Statly, an environmental biology and zoology junior, spent the last five months moving between medical facilities after the gunman opened fire on his classroom in Berkey Hall on Feb. 13.

As the Statly family prepares for his eventual return, they’re working to modify their home to accommodate his limited mobility.

“Even though physical therapy carries on, it is likely he will need to use a wheelchair, and my parents will need to purchase a handicapable-van with wheelchair lift,” Josh said in his statement.

The family is asking for help finding a vehicle, which they’ll use to transport Nate to outpatient therapies once he returns home. Community members can message Josh with recommendations.

In the meantime, Josh wrote that his brother continues to demonstrate “dedication and strength” despite his difficult journey, and that his condition has “vastly improved.”

“He's also been talking and laughing again, which has only reminded me how much happiness Nate can bring to a room, even in this situation,” Josh said in the statement.

Nate is one of five victims of the shooting whose families intend to sue Michigan State University for complaints on the school’s security. Attorneys claim MSU “failed to protect students” by not addressing defective safety measures.
