Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees will consider Friday an increase to fines incurred for violating parking rules on campus.

The hike, proposed by the university’s independent police department, would see parking meter violations increase from $15 to $20, disabled parking violations rise from $100 to $115, and all other violations – like parking in restricted lots without the necessary passes – rise from $25 to $40.

The proposal also removes a current provision where meter violations paid within 24-hours are discounted to $10.

MSU Police and Public Safety Spokesperson Dana Whyte said the increase is an effort to raise funds for further physical security measures on campus, such as expanding the GreenLight emergency phones across campus.

Even after the proposed increase, MSU’s fees would be low when compared to the rest of the Big Ten conference, according to data included in the proposal.

At the meeting, which will take place at MSU’s satellite medical campus in Grand Rapids, the board will also consider new medical scholarships and a proposed expansion of voting and membership rights for students and faculty in groups like the university council.
