The popular party store Jonna’s 2 Go recently had to change its name to Manny’s 2 Go. The store, located at 210 E Michigan Ave., is a popular destination for MSU students, mostly due to its wide array of alcoholic beverages and proximity to the downtown.
Store owner Mandeep Singh said he did not want to disclose extensive details regarding the name change due to the fear of legal action being taken against him or the store.
However, he said he first became aware the store would have to change its name from a phone call a few months ago. Though the phone call was friendly and not serious, Singh said, he decided to preemptively change the store's name to avoid legal action.
He added that the former store owner, E.J. Jonna, was not the individual pursuing the name change.
Singh said he decided to rename the store after himself. He said the employees, products and environment will remain unchanged.
“As you walk in the doors everything's the same,” Singh said. “It’s more than a name, like what does Jonna’s mean? It's the people inside that make Jonna’s … it’s the people that work there, it’s the products that we carry. It’s just a great vibe when you walk in the store. That will make Jonnas. It’s not the name that made Jonna’s, so it's not a big deal.”
Singh said he hopes the name change doesn’t affect business and that people continue to support the local store.
“We like working here with the students,” Singh said. “Everybody comes here. We support MSU and they support us. It’s just a name. It’s the same environment.”
