The University Activities Board, or UAB, and Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, hosted a Sustainability and Resource Fair on Thursday. The event gave students the opportunity to learn about environmental clubs and sustainable practices.

The event was apart of ASMSU’s "Earth Week," a series of events dedicated to promoting sustainability ahead of Earth Day on Saturday.

Various environmental groups set up stands to share their mission with attendees. Earth Day themed arts, crafts and desserts were offered.

Beal Botanical Garden organization members attended to inform students about the resources it provides to students. The organization is also hosting a "Giving Earth Day Drive" to raise money for the garden’s Red Cedar River Restoration Project, which will "tackle invasive species" and restore native habitat.

“We’re leading a lot of conservation efforts, including restoration of the Red Cedar River and then species removal, stewardship, education, native plant research," Beal Botanical Garden Education Program Director Maeve Bassett. "So our work kind of runs the gamut. We’re this central little oasis but we also have far reaching impacts."

MSU Sunrise Movement attended to promote their overarching goal of helping MSU to achieve a “green clean future.”

MSU Sunrise Movement coordinator Portia Chana said that while the club is encouraging students to participate in sustainable acts such as recycling, the university must also make changes to help lead to a more sustainable future. Sunrise has advocated for MSU's divestment from fossil fuels throughout recent years.

“It’s nice to know that MSU and UAB is thinking about Earth Day and thinking about the opportunities that can bring people together to raise awareness about the fact that they don’t have a lot of time left to save our planet,” Chana said. “It’s nice to see the amount of people who are fighting for climate justice.”

Student Life and Engagement Sustainability Assistant Dani Vincent said she was excited the fair showcased the sustainability efforts being enacted on campus to get students more engaged in environmental action.

“We’re trying to implement resources, getting things to implement in your daily routines, all that fun stuff," Vincent said. "So our goal today is to reach out and say, ‘Hey, we’re this new program and we really want students to get involved.'"

The event also encouraged students to attend the Earth Day Spartan Day of Service that will be hosted Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and includes a kick-off event at the Broad College of Business, bus transportation to the volunteer sites, breakfast, lunch and a free t-shirt.
