VIDEO: Coping creatively: MSU student is a songwriter for change

Social science education freshman Jacinta Henry started writing songs when she was 14 years old.

The week after Michigan State University experienced a mass shooting on Feb. 13, where three students died and five more were critically injured, Henry reached out to protest organizers to speak.

"I knew that we had to get change happening," Henry said.

And she hoped to offer something different using a familiar way of coping. A song.

Henry performed her song, “America,” on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol and in front of the Sit Down, Speak Up protest on Feb. 20, among other students who read speeches and spoken-word poetry.
