Person spotted with knife in police custody, no threat imminent

UPDATE 2:13 p.m.

MSU Police and Public Safety posted an update to their Twitter account at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. 

"Earlier this afternoon, East Lansing Police Department responded to a business in Downtown East Lansing where there was an altercation," Police Chief Chris Rozman said. "The suspect was seen with a knife and they left that business, walked across Grand River and they were seen on the campus of Michigan State University."

MSU Police then announced through MSU Alert that an individual was on campus with a knife.

East Lansing Police then located the suspect at another Downtown East Lansing business and took him into custody.

"We know that this incident may have been impact for many and the alerts that we sent may have invoked a range of emotions," Rozman said. "We validate that and acknowledge that while wanting to provide an accurate update at the same time."

UPDATE 1:27 p.m.

The suspect was located in downtown East Lansing by the East Lansing Police Department and is in law enforcement custody, MSU Police confirmed. 

"There is no longer a threat to campus. There is no need to shelter-in-place," MSU Police said in a tweet.

UPDATE 1:23 p.m.

There is no longer a believed imminent threat to campus and the secure-in-place is being lifted, police say.

"A man was reported being seen in downtown East Lansing with a knife. He then walked across Grand River and was seen on campus near Ramp 6. Officers are in the area and working to locate the suspect, but he may have left the area," MSU Police and Public Safety said in a tweet

"The assault was initiated off campus and officers remain in the area attempting to locate the subject," an MSU alert said.

1:08 p.m.

A person was seen with a knife "at or near" West Circle Drive, Michigan State University police report. 

The person is described by witnesses as "a tall light skinned Native American male, in his 30's, wearing a grayish colored hoodie, with a black mask, black pants and beige coat," an MSU alert said.

The person was last seen in the area of Grand River Avenue and Ramp 6.
