The ASMSU Policy Committee meets on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 at the student services building.

As Michigan State University implements a new security change — locking a majority of campus buildings after 6 p.m. and requiring a Spartan ID to unlock them — students have flooded the International Center looking for replacement IDs. ASMSU will be covering the $20 fee for new IDs for all undergraduate students through March 24, ASMSU public relations manager Brandi Stover said.

Before buildings on campus were locked in the evening, there were limited needs for a student ID, particularly for students living off-campus. If they didn't use dining hall meal swipes or have special access to specific buildings like research labs, Stover said many students didn't need to keep track of their ID cards.

The goal of the bill is to ensure equal access to campus buildings for all students without them worrying about financials. The bill will be officially introduced at the ASMSU general assembly meeting Thursday by a Residence Hall Association representative and a James Madison College representative.

"Off campus students are still students and they still have need to get into these buildings later at night," Stover said.

Students who need a new ID should head to the International Center which holds the ID Office. ASMSU has been in contact with the office to keep them aware of the program.

Students who get a new ID through March 24 will not be charged but will otherwise receive the exact same service, Stover said.

"We just want to make sure that everyone has access to buildings on campus while still feeling safe," Stover said.
