MSU graduate student Emily Damman will be hosting Spartan Sunday, a volunteer event meant to brighten up the campus for students as they return from being home on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“When I was driving through campus today to get to work, I saw the yellow caution tape and it just broke my heart,” Damman said. “That is just such a devastating thing to come home to.”

Damman and her friends got together and discussed what they could do that was both affordable and helpful.

“We were like, let's just go do trash pickup,” Damman said. “If we can bring or get donations, we’ll go buy some snacks for everyone to give to students who are coming back.”

From there, Damman made a flyer and posted it on social media, which ended up blowing up.

Tables and tents will be set up along Red Cedar River at the Spartan Statue, The Rock and Spartan Stadium.

In terms of donations, she shared that she received nearly $1,300 in just two hours and they keep rolling in. Anyone interested in contributing can make out their donation to @spartan_sunday on Venmo and simply include what you would like the money to be used for.

“We’re going to get snacks, toiletries, coloring books, colored pencils, just to hand out to the students as they come home,” Damman said

Damman said that even if volunteers can’t afford to bring crafts or tables, they are still encouraged to come with trash bags, friends or speakers. The goal is to make campus lively on Sunday in any way possible.

Volunteers can walk the river and pick up trash or head to popular spots on campus and along Grand River Avenue to give out $5-10 gift cards.

“I think campus is an amazing place," Damman said. "It's so beautiful here and it shouldn't be something sad to come home to, even given the tragedy that we went through.”
