Here's where students can get support at Michigan State University

Michigan State University and the East Lansing community has sprung into action with making sure students are supported and have outlets to cope after the mass shooting Monday night.

Michigan State Counseling and Psychiatric Services announced that there are CAPS counselors are at Akers, Brody Square and Shaw private dining rooms. There are Employee Assistance program counselors in the Akers private dining room as well.

CAPS also has a 24/7 virtual crisis hotline that students can call and speak with a counselor at any point in time. They can be reached by pressing “1” after calling (517) 355-8270.

There are also virtual listening spaces available for all those who are part of the MSU community starting today, February 14 through Thursday, February 16.

The Community Mental Health center is also working to set up even more resources for the community fo East Lansing in the next week days. 

"We are working now with East Lansing library who's planning an opportunity tomorrow at the library for some community support," chief executive officer Sara Lurie said. 

The center has staff who are trained in critical incident stress management and existing mobile crisis for crisis intervention. They also have 24/7 walk-in crisis services.

Self-guided resources, such as soothing breathing techniquesprogressive muscle relaxation and others are available on the CAPResources page.

For faculty and staff seeking counseling can access the MSU Employee Assistance Program for in-person and Zoom services.

Outside of counseling services offered by MSU, East Lansing is home to trauma specialists at Rooted Counseling, as well as a number of other therapy clinics.

Sindhu Indian Cuisine is also working to support students by providing lunch boxes if students are unable to get on or off campus dining during this time. They have options for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian eaters.

“They just have to walk in, show their student ID and they grab the box” Fatima Joseph, the owner of the restaurant said.

Lansing's Strange Matter Coffee will be serving free drip coffee through Wednesday.
