Tubtim "Sue" Howson has been accused by federal authorities of fleeing the United States to avoid prosecution in relation to a Jan. 1 hit-and-run incident in Oakland Township, which resulted in the death of Michigan State University student Benjamin Kable, according to a press statement released by the Oakland County Sheriff's Department.

Magistrate judge Anthony P. Patti of the U.S District Court signed a warrant Feb. 6 charging Howson with interstate flight to avoid prosecution, a five-year felony.

Howson fled the scene of the crash after Kable was hit.

Oakland County prosecutors also charged Howson on Feb. 2 with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, another five-year felony

The FBI is working with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office to locate Howson and return her to Michigan.

Investigators determined Howson left Detroit on Jan. 3, traveled to Dallas, Texas and then to Helsinki, Finland before arriving in Bangkok, Thailand on Jan. 5.

In the press statement, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said he's proud of the work his team did to identify Howson and learn she fled the country right after the hit-and-run happened

"I call on the Thai government to extradite her so we can hold her accountable for her actions involving this young man's tragic death," Bouchard said, according to the statement.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department was not available for comment at time of publication.
