Impact 89FM, Michigan State University's student-run radio station, has been named the Michigan College Radio Station of the Year by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, or MAB, for the 18th time in 22 years.

The award was presented to the executive board on April 7, and subsequently to the entire staff on April 12. The MAB officially recognized the station via a virtual ceremony on April 13.

General Manager Jeremy Whiting said the honor was a reflection of the individual efforts of everyone on staff.

"It's really showing that our students are contributing in all sorts of different ways that really made for a well-rounded radio station that fits the needs of students and our community," Whiting said.

He also said the level of success the station has seen this year is inspiring, as there was uncertainty going into the first in-person academic year since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We didn't really know how things would go especially coming back. We didn't know if we'd have the same level of staffing," Whiting said. "It's actually been the opposite. ... They feel that there's a good community here at the radio station, and we're just so happy that all the students are involved."

Impact also won the College Radio Station of the Year Pinnacle Award from the College Media Association in November — their first time winning the national title.

In addition to the station-wide award, 10 individual or team awards were presented to various staff members. First place finishers include Sophie Scheuerle for Promotional Announcement, Zach Surdenik and Bobby Zeffero for Sports Announcing Team and Isaiah Johns, George Pham, Henry Menigoz and Josh Hornstein for Use of Multimedia.

As for next year, the station is making moves towards upgrading sports and podcast coverage.

"We're planning on some big moves in sports. We're redoing our sports studio, so we're going to be doing more podcasts. We're going to add some video components and really step up our game there," Whiting said. "So we're really excited about that for next year."
