MSU Police and Public Safety responded to a single-car accident Thursday morning around 4 a.m. at the Spartan Statue located near Beal Street and Kalamazoo Street on Michigan State University’s campus.

After assessment by MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, it was found that the Sparty Statue itself was not damaged. The landscaping and area surrounding the statue, however, did sustain minor damage.

The driver fled the scene on foot after crashing but was later located by officers, MSU Police and Public Safety reported.

The driver, who has no affiliation with MSU, was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a high BAC. He is currently being held at the Ingham County Jail.

“It's pretty cut and dry,” Michigan State University Police Department inspector Chris Rozman said. “There's not any damage to the Sparty Statue at all. The driver of the vehicle, who's not affiliated with the university, was arrested for drunk driving and is lodged at the Ingham County Jail.”
