Trustee Renee Knake Jefferson announced today she would run to keep her position on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.
She was originally appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in Dec. 2019 following the resignation of Nancy Schlichting, who resigned following disagreements amongst the board about whether or not to release documents relating to the ex-MSU doctor Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.
Her term officially ends on Jan. 1, 2023, along with trustee Melanie Foster’s. Both seats will be voted on during the primary election taking place on Aug. 2, 2022, and the general election, which will take place on Nov. 8, 2022.
“I’m running to continue my work as a champion of change and reform for student success,” Jefferson said in a press release. “When Governor Whitmer appointed me in 2019, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. After other trustees refused to release documents surrounding the Nassar crisis for an independent investigation, I reviewed them — more than 10,000 pages — to ensure accountability.”
Knake remains the only trustee who has fully read the documents.
